39th Annual POPS Concert

On Monday, February 10th, 2020, the Centereach High School Music Department held their 39th annual POPS Concert. This concert is particularly special to performers and audience members alike: instead of selecting classical pieces like the music teachers do during the winter and spring concerts, they rehearse well-known pop music and popular radio hits to play on the night of the concert. Additionally, all the music groups join together to perform certain pieces. To begin, Mr.Shaarschmidt’s Jazz Ensemble performed “Brick House” and “Getaway” arranged by Murtha, and “In The Stone,” arranged by Lopez. Next up, Mr. Shaarschmidt and Mr. Sevian’s Combined band performed “March to The Movies,” arranged by Clark, “Star Trek, Through The Years,” arranged by Moss, and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” arranged by Wasson. Afterwards, Mrs. Wesnofske’s Combined Orchestra played “Handclap,” arranged by Moss, and “Hawaii Five-O,” composed by Mort Stevens. This was followed by the Philharmonic Orchestra alone performing “Highlights from Beauty and the Beast,” composed by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. To wrap up the group performances, Mr. Hough and Mr. Gatta’s Combined Chorus, accompanied by James Lowe on piano, sung “Happier” by Marshmello and “Any Way You Want It: Journey’s Greatest Hits,” arranged by Billingsley. And for the grand finale, the Combined Chorus, Orchestra, and Band came together to perform “Baba Yetu” by Christopher Tin, from the video game “Civilization IV.” Another exciting aspect of the concert was the possibility of receiving a scholarship. As each group finished, students waited anxiously to hear if their name was called. That night, the Friends of Music Committee awarded over $3600 in scholarships. The winners of the Marc Greene award were Natalie Walsh, Josephine Shea, and Evan Jenkins. The winners of the Alfred Longo award were Eliane Ferrer, Annika Bumb, and _____. And the winners of the James Trucello award were Isabelle Felizardo, _______, and _______. All of the groups did a fantastic job preparing and performing and put on a wonderful show for all in attendance.
