This year, Centereach High School’s Literary Expo, “We Are Wild About Reading and Writing,” was a huge turnout for the community of Brookhaven. This evening welcomed the Kindergarten Class Book Showcase to the gymnasium at Centereach High School. A part of the literary expo included author book signings in the Cafeteria. These authors ranged from very distinctive avocations and educational backgrounds. However, the writers shared one thing in common: a passion for helping and teaching children. Brian Heinz, an award-winning educator, presented his books: Nathan of Yester Year’ Michael of Today, Cheyenne Medicine Hat, and Red Fox at McCloskey’s Farm. He is the founder of Author/Illustrator Events, which allows for young children to meet well-known authors and illustrators. In addition to the book signings, there were a countless amount of phenomenal poems written and recited by students in the library from elementary schools, including Eugene Auer Memorial, Holbrook Road, Jericho, North Coleman Road, Oxhead Road, and Stagecoach. The poetry themes consisted of spring, summer, nature, heroism, friendship, youth, and the student’s individuality. There were workshops set up by our school providing the children with the wondrous experience of story crafting, storytelling, songwriting, reading bilingually, and more.
