On Tuesday, January 10
, the Centereach High School Fencing team faced off against a district rival, Newfield High School. Things looked bleak as the first round ended with Newfield with six and Centereach with three, Centereach going 0-3 in saber. Things picked up slightly in the second round as four more bouts were won, making the score seven to eleven. Things didn’t pick up until the middle of the third round when it was 8-13, Newfield needing to win just one more bout to secure a victory. David Hatami started the winning streak, with a comfortable 5-2 win in the first foil round. The rest of the fencers began to follow suit as Senior foilist Ray Rahman clutches a vital win against previously undefeated County finalist Jake Hempe. This win was a serious upset and provided intense momentum for the rest of the team. Centereach needed to win their next three bouts in order to secure the win. And they did just that. The epee team went 3-0 with Abir Das clutching the win in a nail biting 5-2 bout. Centereach did the unimaginable and won six bouts in a row to clutch their memorable victory against Newfield.
Congratulations on a job well done boys.
