The CHS Math Team recently had their annual field trip to Suffolk County Community College for tournament participation. Going against many schools from around Long Island in answering some extremely difficult problems, the tournament is split into an individual and group stage, wherein the top five scorers of each grade level get awards and the top group scorers receive Frisbees. Unfortunately, our school hovers around average and gets outshined by heavy hitters such as Ward Melville, Commack, or Half Hollow Hills, but it is still an enjoyable experience for all involved.
The CHS math team is directed by Ms. Monthie and competes on two levels, the state and county. County meets are held at a local host school and 6 questions are administered in three sets of two questions. For state meets the team stays home and answers questions for their respective division ranking, which categorizes the school on student size. At certain meets, no calculators are permitted. The questions are non-traditional and challenging mathematical problems. All students, from seniors to freshmen, are welcome to join, although next year Monthie will no longer be the club adviser.
