Should Teachers Be Allowed To Give Extra Credit For Canned Goods?

Since Thanksgiving is approaching a food drive has returned to our school.  With it an extra credit opportunity for countless students.  Many teachers offer extra credit for bringing in food for this event, most with limitations. This brings an important question to light; is this act ethically correct?

Some teachers believe it is unacceptable to give something (in this case food) in order to receive something (in this case extra credit) in return. Those teachers are not against donating to the unfortunate. They just believe it should be done out of “the goodness of your heart” rather than for the desire of a higher grade.
