This past week on November 12th, Centereach High School’s National Honor Society had their annual autumn blood drive in the back gym. Dozens of upperclassmen students, along with some teachers, charitably volunteered their time and energy to donate blood for the New York Blood Center. Volunteers need to meet certain requirements such as age and weight in order to donate, as the process is somewhat taxing on the body. They were then recommended a high fluid intake for the next two days.
Although a few were rejected based on health concerns, a whopping 46 pints of blood were collected in total, which will then be tested, and stored in blood banks or distributed to regional hospitals. The altruism of these volunteers is able to save lives, as thousands of donations are needed in the US everyday, coming solely from the generosity of donors.
